Adjective

Adjectives are describing words that add detail about the nouns in a sentence.

They are usually placed in two main positions in a sentence:

1. Before the Noun (Attributive Position)

2. After a Linking Verb (Predicative Position)

Linking Verbs: is, am, are, was, were, seem, look, feel, become, smell, taste.

The cake tastes wonderful.

He feels bad.

Modifying Comparatives

- a lot / far / a little bit / a bit / considerably / slightly + comparative degree

- as + positive degree + as

The Rule: OSASCOMP

Adjectives typically follow this order:

1. O: Opinion

2. S: Size

3. A: Age

4. S: Shape

5. C: Colour

6. O: Origin

7. M: Material

8. P: Purpose

1. Opinion

• Describes what you think or feel about something.

• Examples: beautiful, delicious, amazing, terrible.

o A beautiful dress

o An amazing opportunity

2. Size

• Describes how big or small something is.

• Examples: tiny, small, large, gigantic.

o A small house

o A gigantic tree

3. Age

• Refers to the age of something.

• Examples: old, new, young, ancient.

o An old book

o A new car

4. Shape

• Describes the shape of something.

• Examples: round, square, flat, triangular.

o A round table

o A rectangular box

5. Color

• Refers to the color of something.

• Examples: red, blue, yellow, dark, light.

o A red balloon

o A light-blue shirt

6. Origin

• Indicates where something comes from (country, region, culture).

• Examples: Italian, African, Japanese, American.

o A Japanese tea set

o An African drum

7. Material

• Describes what something is made of.

• Examples: wooden, plastic, silk, metal.

o A wooden chair

o A silk scarf

8. Purpose

• Explains what something is used for.

• Examples: cooking, sleeping, racing, writing (usually ends in -ing).
