After missing out on qualification for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Colombia made an impressive start to their latest campaign, defeating Uzbekistan at the iconic Estadio Azteca in Mexico City to climb to the top of Group K.

Colombia broke the deadlock through Daniel Muñoz, who produced a brilliant full-stretch volley after meeting a perfectly weighted forward pass from Luis Díaz. Díaz had already threatened earlier in the match, striking the post as the South Americans pushed for an opener.

Uzbekistan, managed by World Cup-winning Italian defender Fabio Cannavaro, fought back in the 60th minute. Abbosbek Fayzullaev headed home from close range after Colombian goalkeeper Camilo Vargas could only parry an effort from Eldor Shomurodov.

The equaliser lasted only a short time, however, as Colombia quickly restored their advantage. Díaz got the goal his performance deserved, with his powerful strike finding the net despite Uzbekistan goalkeeper Utkir Yusupov getting both hands to the ball.

Ranked 50th in the world, Uzbekistan nearly drew level again in the closing stages when Akmal Mozgovoy curled a shot narrowly wide in the 90th minute. Colombia then sealed the victory deep into stoppage time, with substitute Jaminton Campaz heading home a third goal to wrap up a deserved 3-1 win.
