Position of Adverbs

Adverbs can be placed at the front, in the middle or at the end position of a clause or sentence.

Adverbs of manner

[slowly, beautifully, sweetly, angrily, etc.]

These adverbs are generally placed after the verb or after the object

  • It rained heavily.
  • My sister speaks Spanish well.
  • They do their work carefully.

Adverbs of place and Adverbs of time

Adverbs of place- here, there, everywhere, in the classroom, etc.

Adverbs of time - now, yesterday, today, next Monday, etc.

These adverbs are usually placed after the verb or after the object.

  • All my kids are at school.
  • My father will come here.
  • She saw him yesterday.
  • They will get married next week.

Normal order of two or more adverbs after a verb or its object:

adverb of manner

adverb of place

adverb of time

  • We should go to New Delhi tomorrow evening.
  • Sam spoke earnestly at the meeting yesterday.

Adverbs of frequency

[always, never, often, rarely, usually, generally, almost, already, hardly, nearly, just,etc.]

If the verb consists of only one word, these adverbs are normally placed between the subject and the verb.

They are placed after the first word if there is more than one word in the verb.

  • She never cooks.
  • He has never seen an elephant.
  • I usually have breakfast at 7.
  • My sister has just gone out.

These adverbs are placed after the verbs 'am, are,is, was and were'.

  • I am never late for school.
  • She is always at home on Saturdays.

B. Rewrite the following sentences with the adverbs in the appropriate place.

a. I watch television. (often)

b. Have you been to Janakpur? (ever)

Answer:
Have you ever been to Janakpur?

c. They play football on Saturdays. (sometimes)

d. The weather is bad in November. (always)

The weather is always bad in November.

e. We have fish for dinner. (seldom)

We seldom have fish for dinner.

f. Pritam doesn't get up before seven. (usually)

Pritam doesn't usually get up before seven.

g. I was very tired and I was hungry. (also)

Answer:
I was very tired and I was also hungry.

h. Did you enjoy the flight? (both)
...
Answer:
Did you both enjoy the flight?

C. Rewrite the following sentences placing the underlined words in the right position.

a. I never have understood her.

Answer:
I have never understood her.

b. We are often invited to the parties.

We are often invited to the parties.

c. We all were tired, so we all fell asleep.

We were all tired, so we fell all asleep.

d. Rajan drives always to work.
